Chivay
By the time you travel the 160km from Arequipa to the charming village of Chivay you will have passed El Misti (5,822km), Pichu-Pichu (5,575km), Chachani (6,075km) and the still active Ambato (6,288km), 4 large volcanoes.
Situated at the eastern starting point for most excursions to the Colca Canyon Chivay is small, unassuming and the weekend destination of choice for Peruvians While climbing the unpaved road to its apex at 4,800km you can see llamas and vicuñas, a cameloid species which is now protected, but had once been hunted to the point of extinction. Vicuña wool is known for its fine qualities so they are rounded up periodically, sheared and sent packing for their sins!
A few kilometres out of town are the hot springs of La Calera, where a good soak in the hills can revitalise you for any future strenuous exertions... |
