✈️ Popular Airlines (from the UK)

Currency Exchange
The official currency of India is the Indian Rupee (INR or ₹). You’ll need rupees for all transactions—foreign currency is not accepted in shops, restaurants, or hotels.
What to Bring
We recommend:
-
Approximately £350 in your local currency for exchange
-
A Visa or Mastercard debit/credit card for ATM use and as a backup
Where to Exchange
On Arrival: - Trivandrum Airport (Thiruvananthapuram) has ATMs and currency exchange counters. These are convenient but typically offer less favorable exchange rates—so only convert a small amount here.
In Town: - ATMs are widely available in cities and larger towns. Most accept Visa and Mastercard.
✔ Check your card’s daily withdrawal limit
✔ Be aware of foreign transaction fees
Your redspokes guide will help you find the best places to exchange money or withdraw cash during the tour.
💸 Spending Money
How much you spend depends on your personal preferences for dining, shopping, and activities. For a 14-day trip, we estimate £350 is more than enough for day-to-day expenses.

-
Carry small denomination notes—useful for tips, snacks, or local markets.
-

And remember, your redspokes guide is here to help—you’re in good hands.
💁♂️ Staff Tipping
Tipping is a common way to show appreciation for your local guides and support crew. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated when service exceeds expectations.
At redspokes, we make it clear to our teams that tips are not an obligation, but a bonus based on performance. If you feel your guide and support crew provided excellent service, a tip at the end of the tour is a meaningful gesture.
How to Tip
We recommend tipping as a group, with the total collected and handed to your guide, who will distribute it fairly among the team.
Suggested Amount
💷 £60–£80 per person
💵 $80–$100 equivalent
Please note: Tips are not a substitute for wages. Our local teams are paid fairly and competitively—tips are simply a personal thank-you for exceptional service.
🚲 Bike Support
🛻 Full Vehicle Support
Throughout the tour, you’ll have the security of a dedicated support vehicle—either a jeep or a minibus. This vehicle:
Transports your main luggage between overnight stops
Is available if you need a break from cycling
Travels with the group, typically stopping every 12 miles (20 km)
🔧 On-Tour Repairs
Our experienced tour leaders carry a comprehensive tool kit and can assist with most minor bike repairs. During the ride, you’ll only need a small daypack for essentials like your camera, snacks, or sunscreen.
⚠️ Bringing Your Own Bike?
If you plan to bring your own bike:
It must be in excellent working condition
We strongly recommend a full service at a professional bike shop before your trip
While our team can help with most issues, we can’t guarantee parts or tools for every bike type.
🚲 Bike Hire & 🛏️ Single Room Options
If you’d like to hire a standard bike for your tour, or prefer the comfort of a single room, we can usually arrange this for you at an additional cost.
These options are:
✅ Available during the online booking process
✉️ Or can be requested later by email, subject to availability
🚴♀️ Who Travels with Us?
We welcome a wide mix of cyclists on our tours — from couples and friends to solo travellers.
🛏️ Room Sharing & Single Supplement
Our tour prices are based on twin-share accommodation.
Solo travellers are paired with another solo participant of the same gender.
Prefer your own space? You can usually upgrade to a single room for an additional charge (subject to availability).
Let us know your preferences at the time of booking — we’re here to help make your trip as comfortable as possible.
🍛 Meals & Dietary Information – Kerala
Most meals are included in the trip price, with the exception of non-cycling days and a few other exclusions — please refer to the itinerary for full details.
If you have any special dietary requirements, let us know at the time of booking. Most diets can be catered for, but it's essential we’re informed in advance.
🍽️ Local Cuisine
South Indian and traditional Keralan cuisine is predominantly vegetarian and features richly spiced (but not overly hot) dishes. Meals often include rice, vegetables, fish, and a wide array of fresh fruits.
Seafood is common along the coast.
Grated coconut and coconut milk are widely used for flavour and texture.
Black pepper, cardamom, clove, ginger, and cinnamon are staple spices.
A full-course Sadya (feast meal) is usually served on special occasions — a vegetarian banquet of rice with up to 20 accompaniments, all served on a banana leaf.
🍳 Typical Breakfast Dishes
Dosa – fermented rice-and-lentil pancake
Appam – rice pancake with a soft centre
Pathiri – thin rice flour flatbread
🥤 Drinks
Tea and soft drinks are widely available and inexpensive.
A large bottle of beer costs around £3 (US$5), though alcohol is not widely available in Kerala due to state restrictions.
Let your appetite guide you — the variety and freshness of Kerala’s cuisine is a highlight of the journey!
Travel insurance is mandatory for all participants and must cover you for the entire duration of the tour.
Your policy must include protection for:
-
Personal injury and medical expenses
-
Death and repatriation
-
Emergency rescue (including helicopter or aircraft evacuation)
-
Loss or theft of luggage and equipment
-
Trip cancellation or curtailment
-
Damage to or breakage of hired equipment (any such costs must be paid directly to our local agents at the time of the incident and reclaimed from your insurer)
Please make sure your insurance policy does not include exclusions for any activities involved in your tour, such as cycling or adventure travel.
We strongly recommend taking out your travel insurance at the time of booking to ensure you are covered in case of cancellation before the trip begins.
All insurance claims must be made directly through your provider.
🛏️ Accommodation – Kerala Tour
We select accommodation based on comfort and character rather than luxury, ensuring it suits the needs of cyclists and supports the best possible experience throughout your journey.

Many rooms offer en suite bathrooms and 🌬️ air conditioning, although amenities may vary slightly depending on location.
🧳 All accommodations are cyclist-friendly and selected to support the flow of the tour and local immersion.

Our support vehicle carries a complete toolkit, spare parts, and a track pump to handle any issues along the way.
Customise Your Ride
All bikes come with standard flat pedals. If you prefer using SPD or clip-in pedals, feel free to bring your own.
Similarly, if you have a personal saddle you’d like to use, you're welcome to bring it along. Our guide will be on hand to fit your pedals and saddle to your hire bike.
Helmet Policy
Please note that cycle helmets are not included in the bike hire. You must bring your own helmet — helmet hire or purchase cannot be guaranteed on location.
Wearing a helmet is mandatory while cycling. Failure to do so is at your own risk and may impact the validity of your travel insurance.

Staying Hydrated on Hot Rides – 6 Tips for Cyclists
As a cycling company, we know how important proper hydration is—especially when you're out riding in hot conditions. Below are some general hydration tips that riders find helpful for staying fuelled and feeling strong on the bike.
Please note: We are not medical professionals and this information should not replace advice from a qualified healthcare provider. Each cyclist is different, so if you have specific health concerns or conditions, it is always best to consult your doctor and adhere to their advice.
1. Prioritize Gut Health
Why it matters: A healthy gut = better absorption of water and nutrients.
How to do it: Fuel your microbiome with probiotics (like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut) and prebiotics (like garlic, onions, and bananas) to keep your digestion and hydration on point.
2. Time Your Hydration
Why it matters: When you drink can be just as important as how much.
How to do it: Start your day with a big glass of water—add a splash of lemon or a pinch of sea salt for extra hydration power.
3. Hydrate Beyond Water
Why it matters: Water isn’t the only way to hydrate.
How to do it: Mix in coconut water, bone broth, or other nutrient-rich drinks to stay hydrated and replenish lost electrolytes—especially during long rides or after sweating.
4. Don’t Forget the Minerals
Why it matters: Minerals like sodium, calcium, and magnesium help your body retain water.
How to do it: Eat mineral-rich foods like salted nuts, seeds, and dairy—or consider a quality mineral supplement if needed.
5. Absorb Water Better
Why it matters: Guzzling water too quickly can flush out nutrients and be poorly absorbed.
How to do it: Sip consistently throughout the day. Add a pinch of sea salt to your bottle, and include water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and pineapple.
6. Keep Your Electrolytes in Check
Why it matters: Electrolytes help regulate fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions.
How to do it: Eat foods high in potassium and magnesium like bananas, avocados, and leafy greens. Add electrolyte tablets or a pinch of sea salt to your water, especially after intense sweat sessions.
In terms of clothing this is clearly up to you and we can only supply a rough guide as to what to take. This guide is entirely flexible and should be tailored to your specific needs. The weather can be very hot, so light weight cotton clothes are recommended.
